Discovery of a new type of a Scorpion

The National Center for Wildlife announced a new scientific addition after discovering a new species of scorpion belonging to the genus Leiurus in the Majami Al-Hadb Reserve south of Riyadh. This was based on the description of the visible characteristics and the genetic analysis of the newly discovered species. The findings were published in international scientific journals specialized in wildlife, highlighting the value of this new discovery.

The naming of this new species of scorpion is in reference to the Majami Al-Hadb Reserve, where the new scorpion species were recently discovered. Studies on both the morphological and molecular genetic aspects indicate that this species differs from its counterparts in other genera in the Kingdom. This brings the total number of known species in this genus to 22 worldwide, including 5 species in the Kingdom.

The renowned scientific journal Zookeys published the new discovery in its issue released on September 7, 2023. Additionally, this species has been added to the lists of the Zoobank and Genbank databases.

This discovery is part of the ongoing efforts of the National Center for Wildlife and its studies aiming to determine the distribution and assess the future status of this species. It aligns with the center’s approach to care for wildlife, with the goal of sustaining environmental balance and biodiversity in the Kingdom.
